Community Engagement

New Schools / Better Neighborhoods' guiding principle is "schools as centers of communities." It is clearly impossible to realize that objective without reinvolving communities in decisions about their schools. Those individuals who live and work in the community must have a direct role in determining how their schools will look and function.

Unfortunately, many school districts have never included meaningful community participation in the new school design/planning process. More importantly, school district personnel have neither a firm understanding nor the institutional habits to effectively work with community members.

Our goal is to have school districts across California partner with community members during the new school sitting, planning, and design process. The community must be engaged as opposed to merely being asked for approval at the end of the process.

This section highlights various efforts to effectively involve community members in the development of new public schools.
